Signs You Need Tree Removal

Harrison Township is one of the oldest documented settlements in South Jersey — Quaker settlers established the Mullica Hill village in the early 1700s, the Mullica Hill Historic District grew along Main Street (Route 322), and the borough became the one of Gloucester County's earliest Quaker settlements to establish a Mullica Hill Historic District (NRHP-listed). That history means heritage trees that have been on the same lots since the 1800s, alongside the parks (Mullica Hill, Harrison Township parks, the village square, Main Street historic district, Mullica Hill canopy) with mature canopies. Six signs Paul looks for first.

01 · Diagnostic

Vertical cracks in the trunk

Splits running up or down the main trunk indicate structural failure has begun.

02 · Diagnostic

Bark peeling in large chunks

Healthy trees shed bark slowly. Large patches falling away in a single season point to internal decline.

03 · Diagnostic

Fungus growing on the trunk or root flare

Mushroom conks at the base or running up the trunk are evidence of structural decay.

04 · Diagnostic

Significant lean toward a structure

New leans, or worsening leans — especially after a storm — mean the root plate may be compromised.

05 · Diagnostic

Lightning damage or split crown

Lightning-struck trees often show crown dieback within 12–18 months.

06 · Diagnostic

EAB canopy thinning on ash trees

If your ash tree’s upper canopy is 30%+ thinned, the tree is past treatment threshold.

Why this borough

Three Harrison Township moments — and why each one shapes how we work here.

No other South Jersey town carries this combination: a state-formation site, the discovery site of the Quaker farmstead canopy, and a 350-year tradition of careful stewardship.

i.
19th century

The heritage canopy discovery

the original settlers uncovered “the original farmstead canopy found in North America” from a farmstead on Main Street. heritage canopy foulkii became the New Jersey state dinosaur in modern era. The 17-foot bronze “Mullica Hill heritage” statue on Main Street has anchored the downtown since 2003. The discovery site sits inside Mullica Hill — a National Historic Landmark with mature canopy we treat the way arborists treat heritage trees in any historic-landmark setting.

ii.
1777

Where New Jersey became a state

The Main Street historic district, built 1700s, hosted the New Jersey Legislature when it declared independence in 1777. The tavern still stands as a State Historic Site and museum on Main Street. The trees lining Main Street are part of that civic memory — they shade the same approach the original assemblymen walked. Working a tree near the Tavern is not a routine residential job. It is preservation work.

iii.
the historic district era

Second NJ historic preservation district

Harrison Township became the second municipality in New Jersey (after Cape May) to establish a historic preservation district in the historic district era. Half a century of regulated streetscape standards is why the borough still reads as a heritage town. It also sets the bar for tree work: nothing happens here without consideration of the streetscape. Most jobs need written documentation for property files.

Local pressure

What Harrison Township Trees Actually Need

Three pressures specific to a 350-year-old historic district. Knowing which one applies determines whether the call is for treatment, pruning, or removal.

1700ss & older

Heritage Canopy on Main Street

The white oaks, sycamores, and tulip poplars along Main Street predate most of the buildings they shade. These are not routine residential trees. Crown reduction, structural pruning, and risk assessment here are preservation operations, with documentation for the borough record.

1860s–1920s

Subdivision-Era Plantings

Most of Harrison Township’s residential canopy was planted during the borough’s 1880s–1920s subdivision build-out. Many of those trees are now hitting structural failure age — thinning crowns, included bark, decay at the base. The pace of Harrison Township’s replanting cycle has not kept up. Risk-assessment and staged-removal planning matter here.

Modern pressure

EAB & Compaction

Emerald ash borer is established across Gloucester County. Untreated ash on Harrison Township blocks typically fails within 3–5 years of first canopy thinning. On top of that, the borough’s walkable density means root flares get walked on year after year — soil compaction here is its own diagnostic frame.

I first used Tree Awareness back in the 90’s to take out 2 overgrown trees at my property in West Deptford. Both very large, and very close to the house. I used them again about 10 years ago for the same reason at my current property. When we had a wet heavy snow a few weeks ago, a tree that hangs over my roof and still has dead leaves on it, was so weighed down it was touching the roof, and the tree itself was leaning pretty precariously Towards the house. When I saw today that we might be getting 11”-15” of heavy wet snow this weekend, I was in a panic. I called them, assuming that they were probably booked solid, and they were. After explaining my situation to the office manager, she said let me see what we can do. She responded quickly, and even though they were booked solid, she went out of her way to make it happen. She had a crew here within the hour. Mason and his crew were both very professional, and personable. They got the job done quickly, and perfectly. I can honestly say after using them, 3 times now, that they are not only the best at what they do, but very professional, and accommodating. They go above and beyond. Their pricing is more than reasonable for the level of knowledge, and skill they possess. I also like that they are very focused on the health of the trees on your property, and don’t look to talk you into cutting trees down that don’t necessarily need to come down. Instead, in this situation, they suggested trimming the over hanging limbs, and canopy back, to make it safe with this storm coming. They could have easily said “it needs to come down”, and charged me quite a bit more. I would recommend Tree Awareness to anybody who needs tree work done professionally, and at a reasonable price. You can’t go wrong with them. I can’t express my appreciation for easing my concerns, on such short notice the way they did. Thanks guys. Keep up the great work guys.

Great experience from the quote to finish! They removed a tree that was leaning against other trees that could have shattered my fence and gone in neighbors yard. They were friendly and did a first class job! Will definitely use them in the future!

Harrison Township tree service · FAQ

Harrison Township Tree Service — What to Expect

Specific answers for borough property owners and historic-district homeowners.

How much does tree removal cost in Harrison Township, NJ?

Cost is driven by trunk size, access (a tight Main Street lot with no truck access costs more than a property near Mullica Hill), proximity to historic structures, and whether stump grinding and haul-out are included. Every Harrison Township job gets a free written estimate before any work starts.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on your property?

Harrison Township was the second NJ municipality to establish a Mullica Hill Historic District (NRHP-listed), and the borough takes its streetscape seriously. While many residential removals do not require a permit, properties inside the historic district or with conservation easements may face additional review. We help homeowners verify with the borough before scheduling.

Do you work in the Harrison Township Historic District?

Regularly. The Main Street corridor and the surrounding blocks need preservation-grade work. We use rigging instead of felling, ANSI A300 cuts, and provide written documentation for property files and any borough record-keeping.

Can you handle work on Main Street near the Main Street historic district?

Yes. We coordinate with the borough on access, drop-zone management, and any timing constraints that protect the heritage corridor. Insurance documentation provided for civic-property files.

Are you available for emergency tree service overnight?

Yes — 24/7 emergency response. After major storms we triage by hazard: trees on structures and trees blocking roads come first. Call (856) 241-0489 and we’ll dispatch the same day in most cases.

When should I prune oaks in Harrison Township?

Late dormancy (February–early March) is ideal. Avoid pruning oaks April through July to prevent oak wilt vector activity. Storm cleanup and dead-wooding can be done year-round.

Do you treat emerald ash borer in Harrison Township?

Yes. We diagnose canopy thinning, evaluate whether trunk-injection treatment is still viable based on canopy loss, and implement a treatment schedule when appropriate. For trees past treatment threshold, we recommend and schedule removal before structural failure.

Do you work the Mullica Hill edge and the heritage canopy site?

Yes. Properties bordering Mullica Hill or Harrison Township parks often have mature trees that interact with park canopy. We coordinate with the borough on edge-tree work and provide written documentation.
