APPLICATION GUIDE

How to mulch the right way.

Proper mulching technique matters. Done correctly, it protects your trees. Done incorrectly — and we see this all the time — it actively damages them.

01 Apply 2 to 4 inches A layer 2-4 inches thick is the right depth around most trees. Thinner if you’re in an area with drainage problems.
02 Extend to the drip line Mulch should extend out to the tree’s drip line — the outer edge of the canopy. That’s where most of the feeder roots are.
03 Pull mulch back from the trunk Keep mulch pulled back from the trunk to expose the root crown. Mulch volcanoes — piles against the trunk — kill trees.
04 Refresh by breaking up, not piling When existing mulch is matted but adequate, break it up with a rake instead of adding new material. The roots need air, not more mulch.
